A fascinating sight. In many cemeteries, there's an almost park-like feel to things - the green grass, the trees growing, and the tombstones that are sometimes statue-like in appearance. However, in winter, the graveyard is more subdued thanks to all that white snow covering the area.

I also feel sad when I see a marker broken, or fallen over. I took a repair class on old stones in cemeteries and with the help of some of the workers I repair as many as possible. Most are very old and have no one to watch over them. This way I feel I'm doing my own little part for someone no one remembers M.Butler

Just worth mentioning, as you said you hadn't come across many of these, it reminds me of an interesting article I saw in the news. I live in Georgia about an hour south of Milledgeville, home to at one time the country's largest mental asylum. Apparently the patients at the sanitarium were buried nearby the premises and recently the graves were rediscovered. Here's a link to the article. I have plans to go there and take photos. I went a while back and got some historic photos but it rained on cemetery day and heard about the "hidden" graves after my visit. We have several old cemeteries in Orangeburg, S.C. and they don't get the respect they deserve. I try to go by once a month and tidy them up, I would want someone to do that for my baby.

Thank you Julie, Brooklyn Eagle for the most part, and a book written about him in 1861. "The little drummer boy, Clarence D. McKenzie, the child of the Thirteenth regiment, N.Y.S.M., and the child of the Mission Sunday school (1861)" Written by a minister, it deals in large part with religion, but there are some valuable bits about Clarry to be had. I also spent a ton of time at the Brooklyn Historical Society. There will be much more when my book comes out. I still have to dig through the archive at the church where his funeral was held. I have a shot of Clarry's daguerreotype in my cell phone. Unfortunately his face was rubbed off, but it is Clarence. That will be in the book too.

The cemetery I recently photographed in Sandersville, Georgia has been restored by the community I am happy to say. I am sad when places are neglected and beautiful historic headstones are broken as in your image.
